Cristina Foisor was one of the most important chess players in her native Romania.

She was born in 1967 in Petrosani and studied Mathematics at the University of Timi&#537;oara. 
 
Cristina was awarded by&nbsp;FIDE&nbsp;the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title in 1991 and&nbsp;International Master&nbsp;(IM) in 1997. 
Foi&#537;or won the Women&#39;s&nbsp;Romanian Chess Championship&nbsp;five times: in 1989, 1998, 2011, 2012, and 2013. In 2007, she won the title of women&#39;s&nbsp;champion of the European Union&nbsp;and received the title of honorary citizen of Petro&#537;ani. 
 
In team events, she represented Romania at fourteen&nbsp;Women&#39;s Chess Olympiads&nbsp;(from 1988 to 2016), the 2013 Women&#39;s&nbsp;World Team Chess Championship, eight Women&#39;s&nbsp;European Team Chess Championships, and three Women&#39;s Chess Balkaniads. In this latter competition, Foi&#537;or won two gold medals (team and individual playing board 2) in 1985.&nbsp; 
 
She was the mother of Sabina Foisor, the 2017 US Women&#39;s Chess Champion. 
Foi&#537;or died at the&nbsp;Timi&#537;oara&nbsp;County Hospital on 22 January 2017. 
 
On August 5-6, the <a href="https://www.romaniagp.ro/events/timisoara/">Cristina Foisor</a> memorial takes place in Timisoara, Romania. 
The format is a 10-round Swiss. The time control is 15 minutes for the entire game plus a five-second increment starting on move one. 
 
T&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;the tournament is part of a great chess project: the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.romaniagp.ro/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Grand-Prix-Romania-2023-Regulations.pdf">ROMANIA GRAND PRIX 2023</a>.
